Karen Everston provides general legal representation with a current emphasis on representing entities involved in ad valorem or local property tax disputes. She advises her governmental clients on the interpretation and application of the Texas Property Tax Code, relevant case law, public law issues and appraisal methodology questions.


Ms. Evertson has been advising and representing appraisal districts and appraisal review boards since 2000. During that time, she has defended appraisal districts around the state in lawsuits challenging the taxability and valuation of real and business personal property. Ms. Evertson has represented these entities at both the trial and appellate court levels.


Ms. Evertson taught the Continuing Legal Education Training for Appraisal Review Board Members for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts in 2011, 2012 and 2013. And speaks at industry related conferences.


In addition, Ms. Evertson is also able to provide mediation services for parties requiring assistance with property valuation disputes, whether ad valorem or eminent domain. If adequate facilities are available, Ms. Evertson will conduct the mediation at a location agreeable to the parties.

Background and Experience:


Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Ms. Evertson graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992. She received her law degree from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1996.


Ms. Evertson focused on eminent domain litigation at the Office of the Attorney General, Transportation Division from 1996 to 1999. In January 2000, she became an associate at Linebarger Heard Goggan Blair Graham Peña & Sampson. In January 2001, Ms. Evertson started working for Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins and Mott, LLP. Ms. Evertson became a partner in their Austin office in January 2005.


In 2008, Ms. Evertson opened her own offices and started providing independent legal services related to ad valorem taxation.


Mary Sanchez has over 20 years litigation experience focusing mainly on real estate issues specifically involving appraisal value and methodology.


Ms. Sanchez has experience in preparing cases for both bench and jury trials. She has also prepared and worked with expert witnesses including appraisers, land planners, engineers, real estate brokers, architects and various other witnesses. Ms. Sanchez has provided legal advice, assistance and representation to both state agencies and private clients with regard to real estate valuation.

Background and Experience

Ms. Sanchez was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. Ms. Sanchez graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988. She received her law degree from University of Iowa in 1991. Ms. Sanchez returned to Austin to work for the Office of the Attorney General, Transportation Division, from 1992-1999 representing TxDOT in litigation involving eminent domain, employment, property damage and tort.


In January 2000, Ms. Sanchez opened the Law Offices of Mary Sanchez where she managed her own law practice and handled cases in multiple areas of law- condemnation, employment, personal injury, probate, real estate, business law and tort. Ms. Sanchez represented TxDOT, Aviation Division, in acquiring right of way for small airports and worked with an acquisition company in negotiating parcels for obtaining right of way for TxDOT. Ms.Sanchez was also involved in entertainment law by becoming an agent/company manager for the the Jose Greco Dance Company.


In 2009, Ms. Sanchez returned to the Office of the Attorney General, Transportation Division, and became a senior attorney supervising over 14 attorneys responsible for the Dallas/Fort Worth and West Texas area for TxDOT roadway projects. Ms. Sanchez also managed the North Tarrant Expressway Project (NTE) in Dallas/Fort Worth area.


Ms. Sanchez is licensed in the Northern, Southern and Western Districts in federal court. She is also fluent in Spanish.
